Getaway: 10 Beach Basics

April 30, 2013

The heat is on! It is sizzlin' up in here and we just can't get enough. The only thing more perfect than this weather? A relaxing mini beach getaway! We'll be taking off in a few days for some much needed fun in the sun. I thought I'd share 10 ocean side essentials I always pack:

1. Bandeau Bikini (Roxy, on sale here). Makes tanning without strap lines so much easier.
2. Chambray Button Down (Madewell, here). Seriously my favorite casual top and the perfect cover-up.
3. Panama Hat (J.Crew, here).
4. Folding Wayfarers (Ray-Ban, here). I love my sunnies. This is my everyday and travel favorite. They are compact, timeless, and just hold up so well no matter what I'm doing.
5. Capri Sandals (Old Navy, here). A classic made even more comfy with cushy padding! I prefer these over the J.Crew ones which tend to hurt my feet.
6. Ombre Beach Towel for Two (Target, here). I love how this is over sized and the print reminds me of the ocean.
7. Canvas tote (Old Navy, here). A perfect pop of neon and such a great price!
8. Sunblock, Aveeno Hydrosport. While I love to work on my tan while at the beach, I'm pretty serious about skin care and sun protection. This works so well for my sensitive skin.
9. Tanning Oil, Maui Babe Browning Lotion. I discovered this during a trip to the Bahamas a few years back and have been obsessed ever since. I tend to burn and it's hard for me to tan, this is HG material in my book.
10. Tinted Lip Balm, Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm. Perfect pink tint, plus much-needed SPF for the most neglected part of the face!

I would love to hear what your beach list faves are!

Style File: Weekend Uniform

April 27, 2013

It's been unbelievably gorgeous these past two weeks. For a moment there, it felt like summer arrived early. Today we were graced with typical SF spring weather - some fog, a chilly breeze, and bursts of sunshine. Dressing in layers is the only way to survive and enjoy the bay. My typical layered weekend uniform for running around town consists of a vintage white tee, chambray button-down, my seasonless J.Crew jacket, and comfy flats. For a pop of fun color, I've been loving Revlon's Colorstay Ultimate Suede lipstick in "Muse"

I hope you're enjoying the weekend!

I've rounded up a few fun and fabulous gift ideas for every mom. From the culinary enthusiast to the world traveler, here are some affordable luxuries that she'll surely appreciate.

Shop It: Our Family Room

April 25, 2013

Our family space is filled with lots of neutrals- gray, white, black and touches of brass. Basically, I like decorating our home the same way I dress. The focal points are always our big investments (sofas, rug), then I like to weave in modern vintage finds and DIY projects (desk armoire). I think our style is laid-back luxe. A cozy blend of retro modern and rustic glam, where comfort and style meet in the middle.

Our Home: The Family Room

April 23, 2013

Most people consider the kitchen or dining room the center of their home. For us, the family room is our favorite. It's a pretty small space, but we've packed a lot into it. What I love most is how it came together over time. It's filled with vintage heirlooms, thrift store scores, Craigslist finds, Ikea hacks, and a few higher-end pieces. There's a little something for everyone, its comfortable, and it's functional.   Natalie has her own little corner where she can craft and color while mom and dad work on the other side of the room. The hubs has his own little office - an armoire with a pull out desk I scored on Craigslist, which I refinished myself into  a semi-gloss white. My favorite furniture item has to be the vintage mid century modern marble coffee table, which was another Craigslist score. The items we splurged on were the sofas, which we had custom made. They are over-sized, extra deep, and down-filled - perfect for lounging, reading a book, and watching movies. We all fit comfortably in them, with room to spare. I have to admit - if it was only up to me, the style wouldn't have been my first choice. The hubs had a long list of wants so the quest for the perfect sofa took over 2 years. They've held up so well since we got them - we picked a fabric that repels stains and is a breeze to keep clean. I designed the cushion covers with hidden zippers so they can easily be washed.

Decorative objects that my husband isn't necessarily fond of, I reserve for my own personal space (i.e. my office, closet, or side of the bed), and vice versa. I like creative storage solutions to keep clutter at bay. The vintage coffee table has a clever shelf on the bottom, where we hide remote controls. Natalie's books and toys are stowed away under the TV console, and the hubby's desk can be tucked away and closed off when not in use. The only item I am hoping to change soon is our rug! We've had it since Natalie was born, and I refuse to get anything new because it just hides stains so well. The hunt for the perfect stain-proof, kid-proof rug is still under way..

Designing personal spaces is always a challenge. When you need to combine different personalities and wants, it can get downright messy. What I like to do first is define the purpose of the area. Then, I like creating a diagram of what everyone has in common in terms of style, color, and needs then start from there.

I'm hoping I'll have time over the next few weeks to take more photos around our home. It's constantly evolving as we all grow together and our needs change. I think it will be fun to look back and see it all!

Thanks so much for dropping by!

Shop It: Zara Mum

April 21, 2013

This totally doesn't help with the baby fever I've been having lately! My fave one-stop-shop Zara just added a new maternity collection online. I check their site pretty often so I know that sometime within these past 2 days, they secretly added a new "Mum" tab to their women's collection. There are only a handful of pieces at the moment - but I wanted to add every single one to my cart! Priced from $8 to $80 - they are great affordable closet staples that can accommodate a growing bump, are chic enough to wear beyond or after the pregnancy, and are perfect building blocks to a stylish maternity closet.  I'm specially loving the chambray button-down and black jumper - so very me! Their denim skinnies look just as comfy and as stylish as their non-maternity counterparts, and are very similar to the must-have mommy Jbrand jeans.

Just 5 years ago when I was pregnant with Natalie, there were barely any quality and budget-friendly mom clothing lines that excited me. H&M debuted theirs just a few months after I had her. I barely bought any clothes during that time because I couldn't justify spending so much for something I would only wear a few months. I stuck to wearing whatever I had in my closet that fit (thankful I invested in a lot of loose shift dresses and tops beforehand). I even DIY'd my own skinny maternity jeans (contemplating a post on this!) because I couldn't find a good pair that didn't cost less than $200 back then!

Moms-to-be! This is what your stylish bumps have been waiting for. Shop the collection here.

Style File: Shorts Story

It feels like summer is here! With this gorgeous weather, we couldn't resist being outdoors this weekend. We hiked through Land's End yesterday and spent a lot of time with family and friends. I kept cool in a relaxed white top and deconstructed shorts.

I'm not a huge beauty junkie, but I feel the need to share this with you! I'm obsessed with Jergen's Natural Glow lotion. The temperature rose considerably this week, and it was time to whip out the leg-bearing bottoms. These stems were so not ready for shorts season (deathly pale doesn't begin to describe...), so I picked up a tube of this stuff at Target on a whim. I am SO impressed. I've tried a few sunless tanners in the past but either couldn't stand the smell, or the color was just not right for me. This. Works. In the photos above I had only applied it twice, and I noticed a bit more of a glow and a hint of color. I can't wait to see the effects after a week of use.

Hope you're all out enjoying the sunshine!

Closet Classics: The Crossbody Pouch

April 13, 2013

Closet Classics: The Crossbody Pouch

It's the weekend and I am ready to lounge around and do absolutely nothing! I really look forward to curling up in the couch with popcorn and a magazine or movie. Sweatpants and tees aside, there will always be that inevitable quick run to the grocery store, coffee shop, or park. In those instances, I like getting dressed without thinking - and that means always having a great closet classic within arms reach. They are pieces that I can just throw on and know will go with everything.

As a mom, I appreciate items that are versatile, functional, and make a statement. Case in point - the crossbody pouch. I've been toting my Celine Trio  everywhere lately- pairing it with boyfriend jeans, a silky top, and heels.  It's the perfect little purse that can easily transition from work to weekend chic. My hands are free to travel or shop in and chase my 4 year old around. A bonus:  the three compartments come apart. I can snap off the pouch I want, turn it into a clutch or transfer it to a larger bag - makes changing purses so easy! Overall, its minimalist yet functional, and stands out without calling too much attention to itself (Celine has mastered this art). The price tag is not that wallet-friendly, but I've found a great alternative in this Pour La Victoire Arken

Fashion Friday: From Runway to Tabletop

Just a few days after this modern cultural wedding I worked on, I stumbled upon the runway photos of  Marchesa Spring 2013 and just about died! The collection Keren and Georgina created could have been the inspiration behind this table top I styled (albeit more of a "street style" version!) for my sister's wedding. The color palette, ornate details, luxurious materials, layers of textures and finishes all come together and reflect what went down the runway. By now you must know, there's nothing I love more than merging great celebrations and couture! Check out more photos and details of this wedding here.

Featured Wedding: A Modern Cultural Affair

April 11, 2013

Why, hello! My apologies, I have clearly been on a little hiatus due to so many things in the works over here. Today I am putting my blogger hat back on for a few minutes and dusting off the cobwebs because I just have to share this gem with you, which was featured on Style Me Pretty today! My little sister got married last fall. It was the most intimate and love-filled wedding I have been a part of and worked on. I was planner, designer, and big sister - so you can only imagine how much more enthusiastic I was throughout the whole process.

This was a simple affair that felt like an intimate dinner party with family and close friends.  The first thing Stef and Shardul told me me was how they wanted the ceremony and reception to reflect both their personalities and backgrounds. They wanted it to be modern, understated, and elegant.  We came up with an overall theme that blended both Filipino and Indian details into the decor. In both cultures, more is typically...more. "Restrained elegance" is what I kept in the back of my head the whole time. For the color palette, we went with nude, gold, and burgundy - which worked perfectly for the fall and looked stunning, sophisticated, and oh-so-romantic. Travel and a long distance relationship was a big part of their relationship, so we added touches of a travel theme into the details with a thrifted vintage trunk and a gold airplane cake topper.  Everything came together in a span of two months, and I'm proud to say this was a huge bargain wedding. We splurged on what mattered (food, photography, furniture rentals, the most gorgeous red peonies for the bride's bouquet) and saved on what we could (decor, favors, flowers for the centerpieces). The venue, Gamble Gardens - was an amazing discovery. It was the perfect setting that had a great combination of indoor and outdoor spaces, gardens, and classic architecture - all for a steal.

My sister was radiant - literally glowing from the inside out, and of course - as calm as could be. I was a wreck. Not because of prep chaos - it was such an emotional day for everyone, and it just hit me when I gave her that last hug before my dad walked her down the aisle. The ceremony was held in the middle of a pathway surrounded by lush greens- it felt like we were in a secret garden! Cocktails then dinner followed with a casual buffet of both Filipino and Indian Cuisine. We dined under the stars and enjoyed hours of laughter and conversation surrounded by candlelight.

To my sister and best friend,
I love you with all my heart!
Shardul,
thank you for making my sister
the happiest she's ever been.

Head on over to Style Me Pretty to see this feature and my sister's own write up!
